CDR Pumps have been manufacturing pumps for the chemical Industry for in excess of 40 years, and have added the specialist pumps to the portfolio as there is a real need for a true chemical handling self priming pump for duties such as tanker unloading, sump emptying effluent treatment plants and bund emptying to name a few.

The units are suitable for priming up to 6 metres of suction lift, with capacities from 1 m3/hr to 40 m3/hr.  The self priming capability is achieved by adding to already successfull pumps the STN & ETN pumps which also add magnetic drive couplings for total containment, and also the UCN-BL which is a mechanical seal alternative.  Priming pot materials include Polypropylene and PVC at this stage.

“Self priming pumps that can safely handle chemical products are in short supply, with most alternatives being available only in metals, when handling chemicals of course, often these need to be in exotic alloys which are very expesnive.  Being a non-metallic pump the majority of common acids can be safely handled by a true chemical process pump with the self priming ability and we already have some interesting applications and field test results that we have trialled these units on.   One of our strengths is delivery of heavy duty equipment, and we will very soon be adding some of these pumps to our “ex-stock” catalogue of pumps to meet customer expectations” says Ashley Fenn.

What’s it about ?

There are already regulations to control dangerous chemicals. You may already be familiar with Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), risk assessments under COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and warning labels such as red diamonds on packaging.

Most chemicals, however, are not well-understood.  Out of 100 000 chemicals on the European market, only about 3 000 have been properly assessed for safety to human health and the environment. – a problem that REACH seeks to address.

Nothing ever happens in a political vacuum and international trade barriers are a powerful driving force. After several years of negotiation there is a new system to classify and label dangerous chemicals – GHS (Globally Harmonised System). This will be put into effect by the CLP Regulation.

Who is affected ?

Any company that supplies a dangerous chemical or mixture to a professional user.  Typical products could include paints, adhesives, printing inks, cleaning materials. If you already have to provide safety information, you are definitely affected.

What does it mean in practice and when ?

It depends on the product – is it a single substance or a mixture ?

If it’s a single substance :

From 1 December 2010 – Classify your products according to both the old CHIP (Chemical Hazards Information and Packaging) Regulation and the new CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) Regulation.

You need to look at risks to safety such as fire, health and the environment and update your safety data sheets to the legally required format.

Label the product according to CLP.  You don’t have to re-label a product that’s already on the shelf

From 1 June 2015 –  Classify, label and package according to CLP only.

If you manufacture the products yourself or import them from outside Europe you must also – by January 3^rd - inform ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) of the classification.

Unlike REACH, there is no exemption for small manufacturers/importers below 1 tpa.

If it’s a mixture :

Until 1 June 2015 – Classify, label and package according to CHIP.  You can classify, label and package under CLP if you prefer but you must also include the CHIP classification

1 June 2015 – Classify, label and package according to CLP.

If your mixture is classified as hazardous, you must – by January 3^rd – notify ECHA of the hazardous ingredients that exceed thresh-hold concentrations.

They have worked closely with various chemical distribution companies to design a mobile pumping station for the safe unloading of IBC (Intermediate Bulk Containers) containers to unload the common acids and alkali’s used in Industry today.

The device is based on their STN series of magnetic drive pumps, which have many years well proven reliability for handling such liquids, and comes complete with either 240v or 110v power supply, Male cam-lock connections, control valve, stop start switch all monted in a light weight fabricated Polypropylene carrying case.

The MPS system has been successfully used by many companies for a number of years, however, a new lighter weight, more compact version, using a smaller pump and motor is now available reducing weight by at leat 7kg.

The Ashton Pump range includes materials from Polypropylene, PVDF, AISI 316 Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Cast Iron and Hastelloy with various diaphragm materials to suit every application that we come across in Industry.

We have had a great month with some really nice orders, some of which have been nice projects too – 10 Stainless steel mag-drives to a Northampton Chemical manufacturer (Just around the corner which is even nicer !) 2 Stainless steel pumps with double cartridge seals and thermosyphon vessels to Pharmaceutical customer (New one too !) in Durham, and finally today we recieved an order for 19 of our new Ashton Air Operated Double Diaphragm pumps, to be used on a new filling line handling various solvents – the final being hugely significant, as we have only recently launched this range to the marketplace, so all in all, we are well satisfied with out Month.

The even nicer thing is, we still have a lot of very positive enquiries out there being worked on, and feedback is that we are in good positions with lots of them, so hopefully August will begin as July finished !

2 of us are off to Italy next week for some training on the new products and general developments within our product protfolio next week, so with our sales success and progress at the manufacturing facility, it should be  great moving forward for us…

ETN-L pump installed on tanker unloading application

The ETN-L is a single stage pump, lined in either ETFE or Polypropylene, and was designed specifically for the tanker loading and unloading applications where pumps, by the very nature of operation, will run dry for short periods of time.  Used to unload chemicals and solvents such as Hydrochloric acid, Nitric Acid, Solvents, Sulphuric acid and other Industry acids with a targt unloading time of 45-60 minutes, the pumps are corrosion resistant to ensure operator and environmental safety.

Both UTN (Mag drive version) and UCN (Mechanical seal version) have been a core product range for CDR Pumps for many years, traditionally available with Polypropylene and PFA lining materials to safely handle common acids in Industry, as well as ultra pure, highly corrosive and high temperature liquids covered by the PFA material option.  PVDF offers a mid range material suitable for many of the common Industry chemicals, but at a much cheaper cost advantage than PFA linings.

The units are designed in accordance with ISO2858 & DIN24256 and are available in either Polypropylene, PVDF or PFA lined components, and have the option of closed, Open or recessed Impeller to handle various clean, dirty or slurry Laden liquids while maintaining corrosion resistance.

The mechanical seal options have also been extended, with options of single or double pusher seals, or cartridge seals from the leading seal manufacturers, as well as offering the CDR designed slurry seal which gives heavy duty Silicon Carbide sealing faces, but with the seal springs being external of the product to ensure that bellows or springs dont clog to compromise sealing eficiency  CDR have invested heavily to give customers quality reliable products to keep users failure rates to a minimum, while providing a real cost effective pump solution with after sales back up and support.

The pumps are used widely in metal finishing Industry, odour control, water treatment as well as general chemical and pharmaceutical industryies where corrosive and agressive chemicals have to be moved.
